Bird-of-Paradise

Bird-of-Paradise
is a very beautiful name for a flower, it is said that this is the one flower that is very well known to occupy the landscape in almost every country in the world. We call it here Bunga Sepit Udang and there are a few colour varieties, at around my village one could find a yellow with red, a pure yellow and an orange one. It is easily grown and really fast in occupying a space if not properly contained. The leaves are favourite as a piece in a flower arrangement and is very sought after.

p/s I've put up the first photo in my Flickr account, the original size, about 1.5MB, just wanna test how long it would take to upload a big file to Flickr, just follow the banner to get the full size of the photo.

Cat's whiskers

It is said that it is good for your health drinking a tea made from these leaves.

Still many buds left.

A few flowers just started to bloom.

Cat's Whiskers is a well know medicinal plant that been used by many in this country as tea in relieving the stiffness of the joint and common usage also for relief of arthritic, gout and rheumatism. It's flower really resembles cat's whiskers or Misai Kucing, I never really thought of the plant until I try to google the name of the flowers.... I guess one of these days I'll try to make a tea out of the leaves.

Ornamental Plant

I have been trying several time to capture this ornamental plant but I guess my simple point and shoot digital camera really reaches it limit. Luckily using digital camera you are limited only by battery charge cycle and not the print so I can shoot as many as I like and don't have to pay a dime for it. Thank goodness again for the technology. This picture is taken using my Nikon Coolpix P1 and hopefully next year I would be able to buy a better camera and I have been eyeing Nikon D80 just the right camera within my budget but it won't be until next year that I could really afford to buy one.

Harvesting Starfruit flowers

I got to take these pictures by chance, while waiting for my mum to pick up something at my uncle's house I stroll around the house and saw a bee buzzing at a starfruit tree. Like a hunter, hurriedly I shoot with my camera since the bee is very fast with tasks at hand harvesting the starfruit flowers for nectar. Just got to take a few pictures since the bee got angry and almost stung my hand. Luckily I manage to ward it off with my camera. I think I can get better picture but at the moment these are the only one that I could with the current gear, I read somewhere to get a better animal/insect photograph one need to be able to take the picture of its eyes but I couldn't get close enough to be able to do so.

I guess there are 8 too many pictures.. a bit lagging while loading all the pictures, or it is just that my connection is too slow.. or the new template that I am using, though I like it very much since it is more manageable and easily modify to suit my need.

A very beautiful flower it is a Bunga Kemboja also known worldwide as the Plumeria. Most of the time these flowers can be found at the cemetery, for some unknown reason it is the favourite to accompany the dead. There are lots of colour varieties but I like the pinkish one better, as of the picture. The flower is very big about 3-4 inch in diameter.

Wild flower

This is a very small flower, at about less then half an inch that bloom from plant that grows wild at the roadside. I guess most flower at one time or another is wild and when domesticated.. opss I guess plant is not animal so the proper word should be commercialized, so then only one can appreciate the value. Emmmm.. thinking back I guess you cannot really put a price tag to nature.

The picture was taken using Canon Powershot S3 IS with macro setting.

Water Jasmine

This is the only plant that if you are keen into bonsai thing you would pick this up and end up a really beautiful bonsai. There is one big plant infront of my house and I really really loves watching hummingbird buzzing here and there harvesting the nectar just before sundown, just wish that I have a better camera to capture the hummingbird with the flower. It produces one of the most lovely smell and is very soothing but most people also called this flower a "Sundal Malam" flower which is literally translated into a "blood sucking night creature" flower thus makes this flower or the plant area rather scary place at night, especially when it is full moon and the imagination runs wild. Anyhow, it is also called santalia by some people and I have just found out the scientific name which is "Wrightia religiosa".

The mouth watering Breadfruit

Buah sukun is very delicious as an afternoon snack and because when cut into pieces then fried, it resemble the bread it is told why it is called Breadfruit in english, and when it's dip in a spicy soy sauce and taken with tea, it really hits the spot. And, to my surprise when I went to my mother-in-law to pick up my little daughter, my mother-in-law ask me to taste boiled breadfruit that she made earlier. It's so good that I finish the whole bowl, I have never tasted a bolied one before since normally it is fried instead of boiled. She said it's just a simple process just boil the breadfruit and then dry it, remove the water and put into a frying pan with no oil and just sprinkle with a little sugar and toss it a around for a while.

I love mouth watering mangosteen, when I walk around the fruit nursey at the back of my home last week , I was very happy that the mangosteen is just about producing new fruits. It's still young though and I think in about 2 months it would be ripe enough to be eaten. Just thinking about it already makes me excited.

Mahkota Berduri

Yellow Mahkota Berduri

Mahkota Berduri which is widely know as Crown-of-Thorns was said to be originated from Madagascar. It is hard to find the scientific name since the name known to me is only "Mahkota Berduri" but I finally found a site that dedicated to the story of this plant and its scientific name is Euphorbia milli. The species that's widely found in Malaysia is supposedly came from Thailand and Taiwan, a hybrid species. I do not know why but my wife really loves collecting the different variety of this plant. As I said in my first entry, the name Mahkota Berduri or Crown-of-Thorns been given to the plant is because of the many thorns on the stem which is said to be poisonous.

Beautiful Red Crown

Small pinkish in colour crown.

The difference in picture quality is due to the fact that the photos ware taken using either my Nokia N73 or my Nikon Coolpix P1. I was hoping to purchase a better camera in a near future, probably a digital SLR then maybe a more consistent beautiful pictures can be produced.
