Buah pisang

pisang

This fruit requires no introduction, I think I am safe to say that almost every person in this world instantly will know what banana is, or else they will go bananas... "Going bananas" I have been wondering how does that expression come about. Banana or pisang in Malay is one of my favourite fruit, easily available at any time of the day, fresh, fried, and chips, whatever state it become, it still a banana. A wonderful fruit, and I remember an advertisement somewhere that it even been called "The world's perfect fruit", chiquita banana advertisement or something.

pisang

Pisang emas dibawa belayar,
Masak sebiji di dalam peti,
Hutang emas boleh dibayar,
Hutang budi di bawa mati.

The above mentioned phrases are called a Pantun, which is a poetry in a special form, originally Malaysian and have been adapted into many other languages such as French and English in which been called a Pantoum, instead. In this particular pantun, pisang is used as the pembayang or the 1st and 2nd rhyme.

If I were to translated it to english with the meaning and rhyme, quiet possibly it would become like this :

Golden bananas brought to sail ,
One of which ripen in a crate ,
Debt of gold, one can bail ,
Debt of good deeds, taken to the grave.

Well, though it is not perfect, the rhyming is there and I think the meaning is almost the same.

Water Lily

It was raining last night and come morning weather is so fresh and the sun shines brightly. A normal morning walk became worthwhile not only because it is good for the body but because the air smells good and the sight of a newly bloom water lily overwhelmingly soothes the soul.

As a flower blooms and makes you smile and forget about the trouble world, new buds sprung out of water ready to take on new challenges. It's a cycle of life until the day the world dies itself. But until then, what you can do is just sit back and enjoy your moment under the sun, nobody or anything can take that away from you. A photo freeze that moment in time and it lets other to enjoy that moment, time and time again..

It is the only thing that you can do since a day passes by like a bullet train. It is already another day, in a fraction of a moment away another half day simply vanish, another month right up the alley, half a year already gone away and with a camera in your hand you have the power to freeze time, forever. And nobody can take that away from you... so click on and on and on.....

Bunga Senduduk

A purple Senduduk's Flower
Note : at Flickr click "All Sizes" for larger image.

Buds of the purple Senduduk's flower.

Senduduk is one of the plant that grow wild almost everywhere in Malaysia. The scientific name for the plant is Melastoma candidum. When I was a kid whenever I got a cut from anything that I play with, and I don't really want my mother to know about it, all I do is munch a few leaves of this plant and then put it onto the cut or bruise. Somehow this plant would stop any bleeding and accelerate the healing process. Senduduk as i know it has two varieties purple and white flower. The white flower is even more famous since it is used by many traditional medicine practitioners as a cure in spiritually challenge environment.

Buah Pisang Kaki

My wife came back the other day with a box of fruit given by her friend. I never actually eat this before but it's a sweet fruit, I guess a cross of between an apricot and a peach. Feel like tomato though, it is called the Persimmon Fruit, it's not among the favourite fruit of my family but I have seen many of my Chinese friends do like to eat this often. It is called Buah Pisang Kaki in Malay which literally means Banana Foot Fruit, funny huh....

Do read my other Fruits labels.. Buah Manggis (mangosteen), Dragon Fruit, Breadfruit.

Water Filter

Install this big water filter in front of the house after much debating of the quality of our water about a week ago. A bit of a bargain since it's in a promotional period and paid through an installation in a period of 18 months instead of one whole sum. After a week just to make sure that everything is ok, this morning I did a backwash, just to see whether it really works. Emm well to my surprise the the backwash water came out very.. very.. very dirty, that makes me wonder what exactly is we've been drinking all this while. Although I have install a filter after the drinking tap, not forgetting to boil it first, looking at what is filter out by this big guy do makes me think twice of drinking at any stall/hawkers anymore.

Love your river

Parit Haji Sidek.

Parit is man made stream or a small river and I think when my great great great grand father with his family and his friends came to open this village more than 100-200 years ago they have an idea that building a stream not only would mark a territory but also good for the plantation of fruits and whatever grown back then. Batu Pahat, the town that I live in is famous for its parits or pt. for short, almost all village has a parit incorporated in front of the village name. I live at Parit Hj Salleh in which taken from the name of my great grand father's name with my family, my mother and my father, a short distance away, a mere 5 minutes drive is my grandfather's house at Parit Haji Sidek.

When I was a child I used to follow my much older cousin for fishing at Pt Hj Sidek and there were an abundance of fish back then, nowadays one rarely see a fish swimming since Batu Pahat from the middle of 1980's has step up to become one of the main industrial town in Malaysia. The parit were hit the hardest that most of the good fish were gone, even now all the scheduled release of factory waste especially from the rubber plant and the textile plant is still being dump into the stream, the worst part is that almost all the factories situated upstream right at where the stream started. You can see that at time the stream is pitch black, another time it is purple and I even see dark yellow and pink the other day.

No more late afternoon swim unless your skin is as tough as a crocodile, even there are no more crocodile, they have migrated elsewhere. I guess the industry is blooming to provide a better community and supposedly a better economy but in return the vegetation is glooming and the river.... much have been said that even the government has launched.. re-launched "Love River Campaign" but it is still the same...

Last week I followed Parit Haji Sidek downstream and the view of the stream was not very good, the smell is intolerable, something should be done to the betterment of our rivers. Luckily when I got to the intersection of the stream to the main river, Sungai Simpang Kanan ( literally translated as the Right Intersection river )one of the two main branch that will flow into the Batu Pahat river in which will flow to the sea, the sight is a little bit better since most of the rubbish, found itself hanging here and there, on pipes, on the vegetation at the banks, a natural filter for rubbish but the colouring still went right through.

Sungai Simpang Kanan.

Standing at the intersection of Parit Haji Sidek and Sungai Simpang Kanan, facing Bindu, my mum used to swim here with her sisters and brothers some 60 years ago. Been wondering what it really look like back in the 50s.

The Black Beauty

Manggis or mangosteen season is finally here, the fruit is also called the black beauty because the fruit inside is white and presumably pure, I guess people used to represent the colour of dark as evil and white as pure and beautiful though it is not likely the case in reality. Anyhow, mangis is my son's favourite besides durian so when I went to pluck some he came along happily, most of the time he don't like to follow because of the mosquitoes but since it's a quite refreshing morning, and I have lit a few dried leaves earlier, there are not many mosquitoes hovering around, a little smoke does do the trick.

Using a long bamboo stick with a small wired caged at the tip I pluck the mangosteen one by one, it won't get damaged because it will be captured by the caged instead of falling down the trees. Emm.. looking at my son enjoying the fruit I am thankful to my father for planting these trees.

I have read somewhere that eating mangosteen is really good because the fruit contains a powerful anti-oxidant that some people dubbed manggis or mangosteen as a super fruit because of the combination of its sweetness in taste, its fragrant like smell, its richness in nutrients and also its anti-oxidant strength. Well for me manggis is manggis, when it is its season just enjoy it fully.

Transformed....

On saturday, just after I wrote the entry Seven Seven Seven, I went out to send my father to the dialysis centre for hemodialysis. After he checked in at the centre and all thing was a ok it struck me that I don't really have a plan while waiting for the 4-hour process. So I wondered along the Summit Parade Mall of Batu Pahat and somehow I ended up queuing for tickets at the cinema, Transformers the movie was one of the biggest hype that weekend, been shown at the same time in almost everywhere in the world and it has been awhile that I have been to the cinemas. Between the torrent and the pirate DVD's, cinemas were becoming the thing of the past. My wife went shopping at the ceramic town of Air Hitam with the kids and her sister hunting for don't know what, my father won't be discharged not until 8 pm, the show started at 4.15pm and it was 3.30pm so what the heck I might enjoy myself with the movie to kill the time.

Reached home at about 7.00 p.m and it seemed that that day was full of everything seven, luckily the ticket price was up, normally it would be RM 7 but that day I guess since it was a blockbuster they charge it higher. Looking forward of a day full of 8th... my friend really dig the number of 8, a lucky number it is said to be... that's remind me of his Magic 8 ball... :)

Seven seven seven

Today is one another unique date.. 7 7 7, 7 day of the 7 month of 7th year.... still remember the hype at the turn of the century 2000 as if was yesterday but in fact it is yesteryears already.. 7 already huh.. and if you look at it, if you count Sunday as the first day of the week then today Saturday 7th, July 7, 2007 is also the 7th day of the week.. weird yaa..

Extracted from http://lighterfootstep.com/five-things-that-are-worse-than-global-warming.html :

"On Saturday, over a hundred artists and some 2 billion people will participate in the Live Earth concerts to highlight global warming. It will be the largest mass musical event in history: a day-long multimedia extravaganza at eight primary venues on all seven continents.

And while public attention is focused on climate change, things elsewhere will continue much as always. During the 24 hours of Live Earth, 214,000 acres of tropical forest will disappear forever. Two billion gallons of human sewage will be dumped into the world's oceans. 10,800 children will die from drought or the lack of clean drinking water. And we'll be 85 million barrels closer to the end of the Petroleum Age."

An afternoon at the playground

Kids do know how to have fun these days, whenever they go they can really find some mundane things like a normal swing to become a very fun tool to play with. I think the exposure that they get from television do influence greatly in what they play nowadays.

Capturing what they do is a different thing and requires patience and great timing. I find it very difficult taking picture of actions like these since I normally take still photographs like flowers and etc.. But I think having a digital camera do make things easier with all the preset that came with a point and shoot camera like mine. It does help in capturing a spur of the moment actiona.
One to take down to the memory lane...

Browsing at Carrefour

Went to Carrefour Batu Pahat with my family last Saturday morning at around 10.30 am.. still a lot of empty parking space, I guess most people still slumbering at home on weekend, it's just a 10 minutes drive from our house. Initially just want to browse around but got hook up at the fruits section, plenty of fruits but under the fluorescent light one cannot tell whether the fruits sold are really fresh. Somehow the light disguise the true colour of the fruits. Got some pictures of dragon fruits and bunches oflychees.

Dragon Fruits.

Lychees, looks delicious but rather expensive.

Taking pictures using mobile devices like my Nokia N73 indoor, the quality of the pictures are not that good. Maybe one of these days I would find a technique to take better pictures using a simple point shoot digital camera then it would be great. :D

A refreshing morning walk

Bunga pokok semalu or the flower from Semalu plant a wild plant at the roadside, if not mistaken the scientific name is Mimosa pudica.. Semalu or base word "malu" literally means shy got it name because whenever one touches the leaves it will automatically retract into a close position.

Orange bird of paradise.

White flower that blooms all day long.

I took this photograph while waiting for the kindergarten to open. my daughter is busy playing at the playground by the kindergarten, they open the place at around 7.40 am and I have 10 minutes to kill. So I walk to nearby small garden to look at what is normally blooming during this time of early morning, well these are the pictures that I manage to take since the ground is rather muddy to step on, I suppose it rains heavily the night before.

Durian time

Durian is the king of fruits in this part of the world and it is now officially durian season here at my place. We have a few durian trees that are capable of producing an abundance amount of durians and some that cannot be sold because the quality is not up to the par so we ate it ourself. During this time that my brother and sisters find their time to come back to enjoy the fruits. Last weekend was my youngest sister and this weekend my big brother. This year of fruit season is a rather special one since most of the tree were gone due to the recent flood but the ones that are still standing are good enough to provide joy and happiness. It is the time to savour the fruits and labour of our great grandparents who plant the fruit trees in the first place.

Ahha, nothing beats the foul and stingy smells of durian, it lingers throughout the house for many days. Even hotels now days prohibit durian to be taken into the hotel and many foreigner cannot stand the smell but the taste is out of this world if one knows how to enjoy it. Thinking back I react the same to the smell of raw cheese when I visited one the cheese storage when during my college years, I guess the reaction is the same when a person is not used to durian smells it for the first time.

My 5-year-old daughter took this picture of weird durian my mother opened up last thursday that had a premature durian inside it. A durian within a durian, weird huh...
